Senior Week Day 1: Dear Class of 2020 from Darlington Alumni

As we move into Senior Week 2020 my heart is filled with so much emotion. When we all left campus for spring break we never dreamed we would not return for the remainder of the school year. We thought perhaps a couple of weeks of spring break and then things would return to normal. When we realized that was not to be the case, our office reached out to our alumni and asked them to send messages of hope and inspiration to the senior class. In true Darlington style, they did not disappoint and we’ve gotten dozens of heartwarming messages from our alumni over the past few weeks and they continue to pour in. Some have asked that their message to remain private with just the seniors, but others have indicated we can share theirs with the entire Darlington Community. My plan this week is to highlight a few each day and I hope you will find these as inspirational as I have.

Today I'm sharing a few alumni reflections from the decade of the 2000s.

From Charlotte Baker (’02)

You're a Tiger - you've got this! While you are missing out on some traditions to end high school, you've got the opportunity to make new ones now and forever. The Darlington motto is one to continue to live by. Wisdom More Than Knowledge. Service Beyond Self. Honor Above Everything. Great things will happen if you always remember to do the right thing no matter who is looking and if you serve others honestly and openly. Darlington has given you a whole family to call on, Tigers from all generations. Your education and your experiences by the Lakeside have put you in the position to accomplish anything that you choose to focus on, something everyone else in the world cannot say. Be grateful for that. We're excited to see what you do with the opportunities ahead!

From Janie Hortman (‘03, LD’13)

I am sure your Senior year is looking different than you imagined, and I’m sorry about the change. As I look back on my Senior year, I do remember playing lacrosse, prom, football games, sitting in the cove, and graduation. But the main memories I have of are the people and the relationships I remember, not only from Senior year but all of Darlington. I think Darlington does such a good job of cultivating the connections among students that no one event overshadows those. My hope for you is that while some of the traditional events may change, you can look at your time at school through your friends and relationships! Good Luck!

From Thomas Kuckhoff (’09, LD’19)

Great success comes from great opportunities. Regardless of the number of the graduation formalities which may be unique for your class this spring, the opportunities as a Darlington Alumni are just as immense as those who came before you.

You will begin your collegiate career, you will begin your professional career, and you will see success throughout your life. Darlington has prepared you for that. Regardless of the headwinds you will see in the near future, they will pale in comparison to the tailwinds you will experience as a Darlington alumni.
