Darlington Career Day will feature a keynote address from alumnus Dr. Daniel "Dan" Garrett ('82), vice president of Cornerstone Research, on Jan. 15 at 8:30 a.m. in Morris Chapel. All students in grades 9-12 will participate in the special event.

"In keeping with our celebration of 100 years of honor for this school year, we know Dan is the perfect fit," said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. "Beyond his time at Darlington, during which he served as a president of the Honor Council, his career has focused on consulting with product misrepresentation, antitrust and consumer fraud clients."

In his role at Cornerstone Research, the economist has worked alongside clientele in a variety of sectors, including consumer products, financial institutions, oil, pharmaceuticals, technology and telecommunications. Garrett's work has included presentations to audiences affiliated with organizations like the American Economic Association, the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, the Center for Pension and Retirement Research, the Federal Trade Commission, and the New York State Bar Association. Within his industry, he is also a published author on the subject matter of antitrust.

The Darlington graduate holds a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Virginia, where he was a Jefferson Scholar. In 1997, Garrett received his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. He and his wife, Nancy Beth, live in Sunnyvale, Calif., and are the parents of Elizabeth, Tom, Maggie and Jack.

Cornerstone Research is based near San Francisco, and has delivered expert economic and financial analysis for commercial litigation and regulatory proceedings since its inception in 1989. The company employs over 500 staff in several major cities across the United States and in London.

Darlington's Career Day sessions will again run the gamut this year, spanning professions from the culinary arts to geology, led by 34 additional alumni: Keith Baldwin ('90), Ballard Betz ('96), Sylvia Brophy ('83), Allen Casey ('07), Jean Early ('76, LD '14), Ryan Fox ('01), Kristen (Fox) Haynes ('97), Wes Henderson ('06, LD '15), Stan Ingram ('05), Dr. Chas Jackson ('98), Dr. Cline Jackson ('98), Chris Jackson ('02), Cleve Jackson ('09), Preston Jacobs ('07), Mike Jones ('04), Bess Kelley ('09), Kimberly King ('05), Thomas Kuckhoff ('09), Ben Levy ('93), Sam Levy ('91), Regan Maki ('98, LD '14), Hannah Montgomery ('10), Emily Morrow ('07), Gillian O'Nan ('98), Jule Peek ('81), Katie Powers ('08), Kristen Rachels ('05), Melanie Sumner-Marr ('82), Deborah Ann Wakefield ('84), Sean Watford ('01), Michael Woodruff ('91), Robert Worrill ('89) and Jennie Wright ('99).

In addition to the regular sessions, students will also get to meet with author alumna Melanie Sumner-Marr ('82), who will be signing copies of her latest fiction novel, "How to Write a Novel," during the morning break.

"Career Day is an opportunity for our students to learn a little bit more about the vast array of career opportunities out there," added Vincent. "It is also a great way to not only connect with our alumni and keep them engaged, but to show our students the importance of staying plugged into the Darlington Community and giving back."

Career Day is sponsored biannually by Darlington School’s Alumni Council.
