Darlington to host 7th Annual Light the Lake event

March 17, 2015 | 487 views

Members of the Darlington Community participate in the Walk of Honor at last year's Light the Lake.

The Darlington Community will come together on Friday, March 27, to walk hundreds of laps around Silver Lake at the 7th Annual Light the Lake event, which is held in honor and memory of loved ones affected by cancer.

Proceeds raised by the event will be split between local non-profit organizations Cancer Navigators and Summit Quest.

“So many members of our community have been personally touched by cancer, and this event has become a wonderful tradition that supports and honors those who have fought and continue the fight against this horrible disease,” said Reba Barnes, director of servant leadership. “Our students make this wonderful tribute happen every spring.”

The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Throughout the evening, students, faculty, parents and friends will walk around Silver Lake. After dinner, hundreds of luminaries lining the lake will be lit in honor and memory of friends and family. A special Walk of Honor will take place at 8 p.m., which will be followed by the release of floating candles onto the lake and lanterns into the sky.

Featured musical performers during Light the Light include Hannah Buttshaw (‘18), Concert Choir, the Darlingtones, ELA-8 choirs, the Middle School Jazz Band, and the Random Notes.

"We hope all of our families, area alumni and friends will come out and participate,” said Barnes. “We have a long list of fun activities and entertainment throughout the event."

Light the Lake T-shirts are still available for $15 each, and can be ordered by email Reba Barnes through March 20. Student Selena Chen (‘16) designed the artwork for the T-shirt for the second consecutive year.

The latest information on performances and events will be made available within this news story.
