Outstanding Student Athlete Award winners Spencer Fields ('15) and Armuchee senior Claire Tibbetts pose with Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame member Bill Pinson at Monday's ceremony.

Senior Spencer Fields was named the winner of the John Pinson Outstanding Male Athlete Award at the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet on Feb. 23. Fields was one of two seniors in Floyd County who was recognized with a $1,000 college scholarship in conjunction with the honor.

Candidates for the award must have received local, area, regional or state recognition in athletics and be active in school and community organizations and activities, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

“We are so proud of Spencer and how he represents us on and off the field,” said Bob Stinchcomb, Darlington's athletic director. “We know the weight of this honor will follow him on into college, and wish him all the best.”

Fields is a four-year member of the track & field team, and has run cross country since sixth grade. In 2013, he was recognized by the Rome News-Tribune as Runner of the Year. He has been named to many all-state and all-area teams, and has successfully placed several times in the track & field portion of the 1A Private Georgia Olympics.

Fields is a member of Darlington's Honor Council, the National Honor Society, the Mu Theta Alpha Math Honor Society, the Cum Laude Society, and Junior State of America, and also serves as Science Club president. Fields has won several E.L. Wright awards for scholastic achievement and was recognized last year as an AP Scholar with distinction.

For the past two summers, Fields has worked in a personal garden, donating all of the produce to Rome Action Ministries.

He is the son of Katy and Jayson Fields of Kingston, Ga.

Fellow Darlington senior Kinslee Clevenger was also nominated alongside Fields this year for the prestigious Rome-Floyd Parks & Recreation Authority award.
