Ha Dang, a junior in AP Chemistry, took the American Chemical Society’s Local Section Chemistry Olympiad Exam during spring break and was one of only 13 students out of 600 in Georgia to qualify for the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam to be given on April 26.

"Ha has been the top student in AP Chemistry this year and she plans to major in chemistry, or a chemistry-related field, in college," said Julia Dodd, chemistry teacher. "Her exuberant pursuit of understanding in chemistry bodes well for a bright future in science."

According to Dodd, approximately 1,000 students take the very strenuous national exam each year in March. The exam is given at a college. Georgia's qualifying students will take it at Kennesaw State University. The 150 highest-scoring students in the nation receive recognition after that exam.

"From this, 20 will be selected to train for the International Olympiad during the summer," she explained. "Four students from that team go to the international competition. As a green card holder, Ha may be eligible to continue past the national level, if she makes the cut."

Dang is the daughter of Quy Dang and Huong Ta of Ha Noi, Vietnam.
