Darlington School’s production of “The Last Five Years” placed third in the Region 6-A One Act Play Competition and senior Banks Mattingly was named Best Actor. The competition was held Nov. 4 at Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga.

“The Last Five Years,” written by Jason Robert Brown, tells the story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein (played by senior Banks Mattingly), a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt (played by senior Ali Harton), a struggling actress. Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple has first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

“Both Banks and Ali worked very hard in preparation for this competition, and we are extremely proud of them,” said Kim Tunnell, director of fine arts. “They were each able to take their roles and do some very special things with them. Banks has never played a lead before, so his receiving Best Actor speaks for itself.”

This marks Darlington’s first One Act Competition since the fall of 2002.
