Fifth-graders Kelsey Garrett and Jack Talley were among the Rome-area students recognized as Terrific Kids by the Noon Optimist Club of Rome this week.
“This annual program honors students who are well-rounded, both academically and athletically, and who have a great attitude,” said James Hutchins, associate director of Middle School.
Kelsey, the daughter of Tim and Rosalyn Garrett, has been at Darlington since pre-K. Her teachers describe her as kind and conscientious. Recently, she was recognized as a Duke TIP Scholar for her performance on the ERB test. Kelsey’s favorite subject is math, and she plays trombone in the Middle School Orchestra. She is also a member of the softball and basketball teams. When she grows up, Kelsey says she wants to be a dentist.
“Kelsey has a sweet disposition, and her spirit shines with kindness,” said BeBe Cline, one of her fifth-grade teachers. “She maintains a high academic average, taking her school work very seriously, and she is a great role model for her peers.”
Jack, the son of Jim and Jennifer Talley, has been at Darlington for six years. His teachers describe him as considerate, respectful and honest. Jack’s favorite subject is math. He enjoys singing and is a member of the Middle School Chorus. He also plays baseball and basketball. In his spare time, Jack says he enjoys hunting with his dad and brother. When he grows up, he wants to be a major league baseball player.
“Jack is a determined worker at school,” said Perree Collier, one of his fifth-grade teachers. “He never quits when assignments get a little tough. His work ethic is awesome. Jack is an all-around great kid.”
Each school in Rome and Floyd County was invited to nominate two students in grade 6 or lower for this special recognition. Several students were selected because of their exceptional citizenship, while others were praised for helping teachers and students, being a friend to new students, or excelling in a class in which they had previously struggled.
At the awards ceremony on Feb. 1, each student was introduced by his or her teacher or principal, and then given a certificate and a goody bag of rewards. Parents and family members were invited to join the festivities and were also recognized for being positive influences on their children.
