In December, Spanish teacher Ashley Evans worked closely with the enrichment teachers to put together a multicultural program to educate the students about Christmas celebrations in Spanish-speaking countries.

“The art, music, P.E., computer and library teachers were all involved in the planning of the celebration,” said Steve Bartholomew, director of Lower School. “The event was such a huge success that plans are already underway to make Feliz Navidad an annual celebration at Darlington’s Lower School.”

Students in pre-K through second grade students rotated every 30 minutes to activities which included Bolivian musical chairs, a reading of the “Legend of the Poinsettia,” making handmade Christmas angels and Spanish coloring books, and learning about Las posadas and the Three Kings Day. Some also watched part of “The Christmas Carol” in Spanish. Students in grades 3 and 4 made poinsettia ornaments and napkin rings for their Christmas trees. The children also participated in a piñata activity.

Later, a musical performance by a Mariachi band and dancers took place in the school gym. Christmas carols were sung in Spanish by all of the students, led by Geraldo Felipe. The celebration concluded with an ice cream sundae party with all ingredients labeled in Spanish. Students were asked to order their selections in Spanish and sit with their buddies.
