Last week, all Darlington sixth-graders participated in the American Math Challenge, an online competition that allows students to compete against peers from all over the world.

Sixth-graders spent two days competing during class on school laptops, and were also encouraged to play at home whenever they had time. Together, the class accumulated a total of 143,000 points.

“When you log on, you play a 60-second game, and you get points for the number of questions you get right,” said math teacher Kevin Ivester (’87). “We played kids from all over the United States as well as from China, Australia, Brazil, England and Thailand. They loved seeing how they stacked up against kids from other places. They also enjoyed the competition with each other to see who could accumulate the most points during the week. Lots of kids even stayed in during break to play and accumulate points.”

The top five scorers in sixth grade were Brandon Cox (11,214 points), Braxton Ballard (9,896 points), Will Crawford (9,629 points), Jake Walker (7,254 points) and Alexander Roberts (6,997 points).

“I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the online game, and competing with kids from other countries," Cox said. "I played against the top point scorer, who was a kid from New Jersey, and just barely lost to him in one of the games.”
