"Bees" by Kelly O'Mara
Seniors Kelly O’Mara and Baylee Tudor were recognized in two different competitions this month for outstanding artwork.

O’Mara won first place in the 11th Congressional Art Competition with her linoleum block print “Bees.” She competed against students from 40 high schools in the nine-county district to win a $10,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Atlanta. As the winner, she and her mother/art teacher, Kathy O’Mara, will travel to Washington, D.C., this summer for a special reception. Her work will be in display in Cannon Hall, located between the Cannon Building and the U.S. Capitol. She also moves on to the next level of competition, where she has the opportunity to win a scholarship from Savannah College of Art and Design. O’Mara’s “Bees” also won Best in Show and a $500 scholarship at the Kiwanis Club of Rome’s Art Showcase and Best in Show at Coosa Valley’s annual art competition last year.

Tudor’s work, a charcoal reduction drawing titled “Cherokee Lodge,” won Best in Show at this year’s Kiwanis Art Showcase. O’Mara’s collage, “Paper Doll,” won second. For this competition, artwork was submitted by Rome and Floyd County students in grades 6-12. The winner in each grade level may be sent to the Georgia District Art Showcase held April 26 in Carrollton, Ga. The winner of the district competition can win up to $3,500 in scholarship funds provided by the Georgia Kiwanis Memorial Foundation. Other Darlington students featured in the competition were sophomore JiHea Yoon; juniors Kun Sun Lee, Thuy Nguyen and Megan Ware; and senior MacKenzie Sidwell.

O’Mara is the daughter of Kathy and Paul O’Mara of Rome. Tudor is the daughter of Christy and Vergil Tudor of Lyerly, Ga.
