Children ages 7-12 are invited to register for Darlington School’s first ever Tri for the Kids triathlon Sunday, May 3. The event will begin at 3 p.m., and all proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Georgia’s South Rome location.

“I hope to empower kids to think outside the box, get off the couch, go outside and do something they never thought could be possible,” said event coordinator Beth Smith, who teaches pre-K at Darlington. “I want the youth in our community to feel like they can go out and conquer the world no matter their economic status, what school they go to, or what athletic talent they possess. I want this to be an infectious and incredible self-esteem and team-building day.”

The route will be limited to Darlington’s Upper School campus and the area of Cave Spring Road between the school and the Boys & Girls Club. Children ages 7-9 will complete a 50-yard swim in the school’s Huffman Center swimming pool, a 2.4-mile bike ride on Cave Spring Road and a .5-mile run on the campus. Participants ages 10-12 will complete a 100-yard swim, 4.8-mile bike ride and 1-mile run.

“Darlington is a vibrant part of the South Rome community, so what better place to have this event?” Smith said. “The racers will actually ride their bikes through the parking lot of the Boys & Girls Club and back so they can ‘touch’ the place that they are helping.”

According to Smith, interest has been great so far. “Anyone that I have mentioned this event to has asked how they can help,” she said. “Many businesses have offered to sponsor us, and loads of people have said they will volunteer. Already, I have seen children’s eyes sparkling when I mention the race as though they are thinking, ‘Yes, I can do this.’ And I want them to know that yes, they can!”

Smith urges members of the community to help spread the word about Tri for the Kids. “I want us to share the details of this event with as many children as we can,” she said. “Whether they come to participate or just to watch, I want them to be there. I hope for a jam-packed, yet safe race that will become an annual event. I’d like to see it grow each year.”
