Fifth-graders Max Berry and Katie Hurley were among 32 Rome-area students recognized as "Terrific Kids" by the Noon Optimist Club of Rome at a banquet Feb. 4.

"Each elementary school in Rome and Floyd County was invited to nominate two students who are special in their own way," said Jim Bojo, club member and emcee for the evening. "These students may have overcome an obstacle, put a smile on the face of their teachers or peers, go beyond the call of duty, or they may just simply be terrific kids."

Several students were selected because of their exceptional citizenship, while others were praised for helping teachers and students, being a friend to new students, or excelling in a class in which they had previously struggled.

“These terrific kids got here because of the nurturing environment created in their homes by loving and caring parents," said Scotty Hancock, president of the Noon Optimist Club.

Each student was introduced by his or her teacher or principal, and then given a certificate and a goody bag of rewards. Parents and family members were invited to join the festivities and were also recognized for being a positive influence on their children.
