When Mrs. Fine was in fifth grade, her family hosted an exchange student from Germany, Silvia Mueller Bauer. Over the past 20 years, the families have stayed in close contact.
This past fall, Silvia, her husband and their two children visited Darlington. They sat in on a fifth-grade English class and spent the afternoon enjoying Fall for the Arts.
Natalie, Silvia's oldest daughter is 11 years old and is learning English at her school, Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium, in Germany. With Silvia's help, Natalie's English teacher and Mrs. Fine were able to set up a pen-pal exchange.
We are really looking forward to learning more about our German friends throughout the next semester while we help them practice their English writing skills! We've already started writing our reply letters!
