Sports Medicine

Mission

Darlington’s sports medicine department, staffed by professionals from Floyd Medical Center, is dedicated to serving the student-athletes of all Upper School athletic programs as well as visiting teams. The department prides itself in all six realms governed by the Role-Delineation Study of the National Athletic Training Association:

  • Injury prevention
  • Recognition and evaluation of injuries
  • Management and treatment of injuries
  • Injury rehabilitation
  • Organization and administration
  • Education and counseling

Services Provided

Darlington’s athletic training staff works closely with many local physicians, and escorts student-athletes to physician appointments when needed. This ensures that the lines of communication are clear and everyone agrees on the plan of care for the individual student-athlete. In addition, Floyd Medical Center conveniently provides physical therapy on site at the school.

The following services are also available:

  • Hydrotherapy (Hot and Cold)
  • Moist heat
  • Ice
  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Custom-built orthotics
  • Iontophoresis (per doctor’s request)
  • Taping stations
  • Blood station
  • An array of rehabilitation equipment
  • Swimming pool for aquatic rehabilitation

Scheduling Appointments

Individual appointments can be made to help a student-athlete regain a physical goal or return to play, but these sessions must be scheduled in advance. A parent or student must contact the head athletic trainer, Matt Carnes, at 706-266-7777 to set up the appointment.
