We’re excited to highlight the Young Alumni Council through a series of Darlington Connects blogs written by members of the Alumni Council. Today, Elaine Hackett Smith ('71T, LD '18) shares a spotlight on Will Crawford (’16), who is in law school at UNC Chapel Hill.
I want to let all of you know that longtime faculty members Sally Rudert and Elaine Smith have shared their plans to retire at the end of the school year. While it is always sad to see our colleagues go, especially those who have dedicated so much of their lives to this wonderful place, Sally and Elaine have expressed that they are anticipating the next phase of their lives with great enthusiasm.
Some faculty, staff to take on new roles in 2009-10

Several faculty and staff members will take on new and/or additional job roles in 2009-10. All changes are effective July 1 unless otherwise noted.<br /><br />
<b>Rick Buice</b> will be an advancement officer. He has been at Darlington since August 1969 and most recently served as chairman of the information technology department. He holds a B.A. from the University of Chattanooga and an M.Ed. from the State University of West Georgia.<br /><br />
<b>Janice Cox</b> will teach kindergarten. She has been at Darlington since August 1990 and most recently taught pre-first grade. She holds a B.A. from Berry College.<br /><br />
<b>Jody Deaton</b> will teach second grade. She has been at Darlington since August 2005 and most recently taught kindergarten. She holds a B.S. Ed. from the University of Georgia and a M.Ed. from Berry College.<br /><br />
<b>Jennifer Helbing (’98)</b> will teach second grade. She has been at Darlington since July 2007 and most recently taught kindergarten. She holds a B.S. Ed. from the University of Georgia and a M.Ed. from Georgia State University.<br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/15289">Gordon Hight (’94)</a></b> will be acting director of Upper School. This marks his fourth year at Darlington, having served most recently as a dean of students. He holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. from the University of Georgia. <br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/News/viewstory.asp?storyID=15341">Marcus Holmes</a></b> will be head of Thornwood House. He has been at Darlington since July 2006, most recently as desktop support specialist. He holds a B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University.<br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/News/viewstory.asp?storyID=15243">James Hutchins</a></b> will be associate director of Middle School. He has been at Darlington since August 2002 and served most recently as Middle School dean of studies. He holds a B.S. from Shorter College, a M.S. from Jacksonville State University, and a Ed.S. and Ed.D. from the University of Alabama.<br /><br />
<b>Tara Inman</b> will direct the ESL program and continue coordinating the spiritual life program. She has been at Darlington since July 2002 and served most recently as head of Thornwood House. She holds a B.A. and a M.A.T. from Carson-Newman College.<br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/News/viewstory.asp?storyID=15261">James Milford</a></b> will be assistant headmaster and director of admission, and has already assumed the latter of the two roles. He has been at Darlington since July 2001 and served most recently as director of student life. He holds a B.B.A. from Shorter College and is currently working on a M.B.A. from Berry College.<br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/News/viewstory.asp?storyID=15093">David Powell</a></b> will be academic dean for grades PK-12. He has been at Darlington since August 1981 and served most recently as Thatcher chair of English. He holds a B.A. from Berry College, a M.Div. from Emory University and a M.A. from Middlebury College.<br /><br />
<b>Elaine Smith (’71T)</b> will teach third grade. She has been at Darlington since August 1980 and most recently taught second grade. She holds a B.S. and a M.Ed. from the University of Georgia.<br /><br />
<b><a href="https://www.darlingtonschool.org/News/viewstory.asp?storyID=15341">Kim Tunnell</a></b> will be interim director of fine arts for PK-12 and will continue to teach music at the Lower and Middle Schools. She has been at Darlington since August 2001, and holds a B.M. and a B.M.E. from Shorter College and a M.M.E. from the State University of West Georgia.<br /><br />
<b>Erin Westmaas</b> will direct Darlington’s Concert Choir in addition to the Ladies’ and Men’s Chorales. She has been at Darlington since August 2008, and holds a M.Mus. from Yale University.
