To commemorate 100 years of boarding at Darlington this year, we asked our boarding alumni to share one word that comes to mind when they reflect on their boarding experience. Through this special series of Darlington Connects blogs, we are thrilled to share those words and a glimpse into the unique experiences and memories that our boarding alumni cherish. Today, we hear from Tyshawn Good (’09).

Tyshawn Good's ('09) journey from Darlington to a successful career in professional basketball and now as an agent aspirant for State Farm reflects the enduring impact of a diverse and supportive community. Describing his Darlington experience as "special," his story serves as a testament to the lasting friendships and unforgettable memories created here.

"I had an opportunity to live in the dorms with people from all over the world," said Tyshawn. "I had a chance to learn about different cultures while getting a first-class education. Being a boarding student at Darlington was special because we celebrated each other's birthdays, visited each other's houses during breaks and competed every year in the RUMPUS competition. We would also support each other academically and athletically. It was overall an unforgettable experience."

Within the community at Darlington, Tyshawn found his closest friends. His roommate, Kurt Purvis ('09), lived with him for all four years in Bergen House. Justin Rufen-Blanchette ('08), Devin Eman ('09) and Bear Dines ('09) were other friends from his house. On the basketball court, he forged strong connections with Corey Roper ('07) and Cole Allen ('09), fellow teammates with whom he shared countless victories and unforgettable moments.

One of Tyshawn's favorite boarding memories revolved around an epic basketball game during his freshman year. Darlington's spirited supporters, known as the "Bleacher Creatures," donned their best costumes and packed out the Coosa High School gym for a highly anticipated rivalry game. Tyshawn, a member of the varsity team, recalls being down by two points with just seconds left in the game. Everyone thought the game was over and that Coosa would win, but then Corey Roper ('07) flew down the court and made a three-point shot to win the game. The entire Darlington student body, friends and family stormed the court right after he hit the game winning shot. For Tyshawn, this game stands out as the most exciting game of his high school basketball career.

After Darlington, Tyshawn earned a degree in sports management with a minor in business from Belmont Abbey College, where he also played basketball. Following college, he had a successful stint playing professional basketball internationally in Germany and Colombia. Tyshawn now lives in Freeport, N.Y., with his wife, Saralee, and is an agent aspirant for State Farm. He traveled to New York City for the Darlington Connects NYC Event in 2023.

On Jan. 28, 2023, Darlington School Athletics retired Tyshawn Good's ('09) basketball jersey at the Purple & White Scrimmage. Good was joined by family, friends, alumni and his coach from his time at Darlington, Jim Van Es. Click here to see photos from the event.
