Unearthing History: The Hanks Archives Project

In the Hanks Archives Room, located upstairs in the McCallie-Kennedy Center, a treasure trove of history has been unearthed. Archivist Annzie Hine, as part of the Wood Fellowship Grant, embarked on an extraordinary journey of discovery. Her efforts this summer have revealed a very cool collection of artifacts, documents and stories that encapsulate over a century of life at Darlington School.

Among the treasures uncovered are ancient artifacts, coins and an oil lamp that harken back to a time long before Darlington's inception. The original Darlington Charter, a testament to the school's founding principles, is also an invaluable find.

One of the most exciting items is the signed copy of Margaret Mitchell's masterpiece, "Gone With the Wind." This beloved novel, intrinsically tied to Georgia's history, is a literary gem. Its presence in the collection serves as a reminder of the school's connection to the cultural fabric of the region.

Equally remarkable are the signed notes and script for the film "Rambling Rose" by Calder Willingham ('40). Willingham, a distinguished author and screenwriter, has etched his legacy into the school's history. His contributions to the world of literature and cinema are now an integral part of Darlington's archives.

Photographs, old and faded, are now cataloged. These images capture moments and people that have shaped the school's story over the years. They preserve the memories of students, faculty, and staff who have passed through Darlington's doors, and now, they serve as a visual timeline to the past.

The Hanks Archive Project's plan goes beyond just curation and preservation. Collaborations with students will ensure that the younger generation is actively engaged in the preservation and understanding of their school's history. Our hope is that this project will not only provide them with a deeper appreciation for the past but also inspire them to shape the school's future.

As the project continues to grow and evolve, it promises to be an enduring legacy that will shape Darlington's future while honoring its past.
