Pre-K to 8 Curriculum Guide 2025-2026

English

Darlington's English courses include extensive reading, intensive writing instruction, and instruction in skills relevant to the study of English, including vocabulary, grammar, spelling, study skills, and research strategies.

English 6

In 6th grade English students engage with the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program, a comprehensive curriculum designed to build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Amplify CKLA integrates knowledge-building content with structured literacy instruction, allowing students to deepen their understanding of complex texts across a range of genres and topics. The program emphasizes vocabulary development, reading comprehension, grammar, and writing through both fiction and nonfiction texts that support cross-curricular connections. Through guided discussions, written responses, and close reading activities, students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for literature and informational texts.

English 7 and English 8

These courses emphasize the development of core literacy skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Through daily reading assignments both in class and at home, students engage with a variety of texts, learning to analyze literature using evidence-based reasoning, synthesis, paraphrasing, and the identification of key ideas. Independent reading is a central component, fostering personal reading preferences, genre exploration, and a greater sense of ownership over comprehension outside of classroom discussions.

Recognizing that time spent reading correlates strongly with gains in comprehension and vocabulary, students are encouraged to read self-selected literature in addition to assigned texts. While classroom instruction provides direct teaching and modeling of reading strategies, independent reading offers meaningful opportunities to apply those skills, deepen understanding, and expand vocabulary. Independent reading includes any literature or texts chosen by the student beyond the required reading assigned in class.

Effective written communication is a critical academic and professional skill. Students engage in both informal and formal writing assignments, exploring the full writing process from drafting and revising to sharing and reflecting. A variety of genres and writing conventions are introduced, allowing students to experiment with voice, structure, and purpose as they refine their ability to express ideas clearly and meaningfully.
