Homecoming king Twyman wins repeat honor

Darlington senior, Myles Twyman was named the Rome News-Tribune Football Player of the Week, presented by Georgia Northwestern Technical College, as voted by RN-T readers.

Twyman received 62.5% of the votes after scoring two touchdowns, including a 90-yard kick return, in the host Tigers’ 44-41 loss to Temple. The running back carried the ball seven times for 63 yards and a score, while also making a 24-yard reception.

Twyman was also named Darlington’s homecoming king at halftime.

Twyman’s first score was his kickoff return touchdown early in the second quarter. After fielding the kick near the right-side numbers, he turned on the burners and blazed past the Tigers. A burst of speed at his own 25-yard line pushed Twyman through a group of four converging defenders, and he had nothing but grass in front of him by the time he crossed the opposing 30-yard line.

Twyman scored again in the second quarter on a 10-yard carry. He shrugged off heavy contact at the line of scrimmage and broke an arm tackle at the 5-yard line before crossing into the end zone.

Twyman nearly scored another touchdown in the first quarter. He was pushed out of bounds a blade of grass short of the goal line after a 17-yard rush and saw quarterback Nate Kunczewski punch in the score.

Twyman is the first repeat Player of the Week winner this season. He was the first player to win the award this year, doing so after making an interception and running for a 67-yard touchdown on consecutive plays of the Tigers’ season-opening win over Mount Vernon.

This is the third time this season a Darlington player has won Player of the Year this season. Junior Bo Powers won the award last week after rushing for 149 yards and scoring two total touchdowns against Model.

Twyman was also recognized two weeks ago as Georgia High School Football Daily’s Student-Athlete of the Week.

Last season, Twyman was an all-county second-team running back. He was also named to the all-region second team as an outfielder for the Darlington baseball team in the spring.

Each week, the RN-T sports staff picks football players as nominees for the Player of the Week award. The nominees are then voted on by readers via the RN-T website.

Coaches are also encouraged to submit their own nominees for Player of the Week to ZPalermo@RN-T.com by noon the Saturday after a game.

Also nominated was:

Jason Cruz-Reyes, Rome senior: Cruz-Reyes received 37.5% of the votes after converting all five of his PAT tries and making a 22-yard field goal in the Wolves’ region-clinching win over New Manchester.
