Darlington Community Veterans Highlights: Parents of Alumni

John Ware is a member of the Darlington Board of Trustees and is the father of three Darlington alumni: Maurice (’90), Anthony (’93), and Lani (’95).

Veterans Day was Nov. 11, 2020, and we are honored to recognize the veterans in our Darlington family. Throughout the month of November, we’re highlighting our veterans in several blogs and on social media. We hope that you follow along all month and help us honor all of our veterans.

Today’s blog features experiences from parents of alumni.

Pearla and Mike Glanton, parents of Mikala “Mike” Glanton (’02), both served in the United States Army. Pearla served as a Wheel Vehicle Mechanic - Honorably Discharged after serving from 1978-1981. Mike served as Army Supply Sergeant and Honorably Retired after serving from 1979-1999.

Wesley A. Martin, the father of Darlington alumnus Wesley “Marty” Martin Jr. (’89) and the grandfather of current Darlington sophomore Ryan Glass, served in the United States Army Reserve from 1964-1970 with the rank of Specialist 4. He served in a hospital unit as a medic during basic training and an Atlanta unit gave him his first contact of the just-beginning Vietnam War. Wesley said, “Seeing these young men return from their horrid experiences with both physical and mental wounds was the toughest part of my service.” In the Reserves, there is normally a two-week session of “active duty” for additional training. In the summer of 1965, his unit was ordered to Fort Benning, Ga., where the First Air Cavalry Division was based. He shared, “During that time the largest build-up of American troops, including the First Air Cavalry, were sent to Vietnam and deployed - our unit felt certain we would be activated with them. Thankfully, that did not happen.” Due to job-related moves, he also served in two other Army Reserve Units before being Honorably Discharged.

John Ware served in the United States Army Infantry from 1965-1990. He shared, “‘A man must have shared the action and passion of his time or be judged not to have lived at all.’ Duty to serve mankind in some meaningful way, the honor of the profession of arms, our Country needed my contributions.” John is a member of the Darlington Board of Trustees and is the father of three Darlington alumni: Maurice (’90), Anthony (’93), and Lani (’95).
