Darlington to present “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”

October 6, 2022 | 779 views

Darlington's fine arts department and The Darlington Players will present "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" Oct. 21-23 in the Zelle Black Box Theatre. Showtimes are 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

"The cast and crew are excited to return to live indoor theater on campus this fall," said Shelley Daniel, theater director. "It has been two years since The Darlington Players performed our fall play in the Zelle Black Box space, and we can’t wait to welcome audiences through the doors once again. We are grateful for the opportunity."

“All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” is a unique piece of theater, categorized as both a comic and dramatic play with music. It is based on the book by Robert Fulghum. The play was conceived and adapted by Ernest Zulia, with music and lyrics by David Caldwell.

Through theatrical storytelling, monologues, dialogues, multiple voice narration and music, the show takes a funny, insightful and heartwarming look at what is profound in everyday life. In this full-length ensemble production, audiences travel through the years and life experiences of a wide variety of characters.

Characters explore their earliest classroom memories, dig their way through the complicated middle years, and finally come to rest in reflective peace, asking the age-old question, “What is the meaning of life?" This show celebrates our very existence – both the whimsy of childhood and the wisdom of old age.

"I am most excited about the talent and vulnerability our actors bring to each scene, the incredibly hard work and positivity the company has shown, and the profound message this show gifts our entire community," said Daniel.

The production features 25 Upper School students contributing as actors, crew, student staff and designers. Thirteen actors will be transforming between each scene, stepping into different roles and personalities on a lovely concept set designed by senior Annika Patel. Additionally, Choral Director Alex Johnson has coached the actors on the songs included in the show.
