Tour England with Mr. Moss on spring break

September 19, 2018 | 791 views

Darlington students, families, friends and alumni are invited to spend spring break in England with faculty members Sam Moss (’63) and Ivy Brewer. The trip will depart March 8 and return March 17, 2019.

"Our spring break England trip in alternating years has become a great Darlington tradition which attracts students, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends. In fact, some participants have chosen to go more than once,” said Sam Moss ('63), dean of college guidance. "Ms. Brewer and I certainly look forward to traveling with a very congenial group of Darlington folks and showing them several different parts of England – ending with four days and five nights in London, my favorite city in the world!"

Each day of the trip will be busy with activity, and the first is no exception. After arriving in London, the group will first stop in Windsor for a visit to the Castle, scene of the recent Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and the Queen’s favorite weekend home. The group will continue to Oxford to enjoy a walking tour around the Colleges of the world-famous University and see locations associated with Lewis Carroll, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. Later, they will drive the short distance to the little town of Woodstock and check into their hotel, The Bear, a centuries-old former coaching inn.

Sunday will include stops at Blenheim Palace and Stratford-upon-Avon. Blenheim Palace is a magnificent mansion and is probably the most illustrious of England’s stately homes. The tour will provide an opportunity to experience the impressive interiors and the pretty gardens.  Later, the group will continue to Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of England’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. They will likely visit Anne Hathaway's Cottage before checking into The Doubletree Hotel in Stratford for dinner and overnight.

Monday, the tour will continue an exploration of Stratford with a visit to Shakespeare’s Birthplace and the King Edward Grammar School, where he was a student; still an active school today.  The group will continue to the delightful town of Bath, one of the most elegant towns in Britain with its imposing architecture dating back to the late eighteenth century. A walking tour will show them the highlights; the Assembly Rooms, The Circus, The Royal Crescent and of course the Roman Baths. They will then check into The Francis Hotel and enjoy a little free time before dinner.

Tuesday, the group will depart for Lacock, a beautifully-preserved village which has been the location for many of TV’s historical dramas. There will be free time to wander the charming streets before continuing to the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge. Stonehenge recently saw some changes as the old car park was done away with, and a new car park and Visitors Centre built a mile away. The endeavor is to try to give a clearer idea of what the monument looked like before the days of modern tourism. There will be plenty of time to

visit the stones and explore the exhibitions. During the afternoon the group will drive into London, where they will check into a centrally-located hotel, the Trafalgar. The beauty of this property is its central location, a short walk from Theatreland, Piccadilly Circus, and the elegant stores of Mayfair.

The next two days will be spent touring London sites such as the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, seeing the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, exploring museums, and shopping at Harrod's. Day trips to places like Windsor Castle and evening theater tickets can also be arranged. The group will also have a formal afternoon tea for the group at Fortnum and Mason's.

On Friday the tour departs for Watford, north of London, for a visit to the studios where the Harry Potter movies were made. The group will hear some of the stories behind the productions and visit the actual sets, props and costumes from the movies.

Saturday will be open to leisurely exploring London and a visit to Parliament will be available for those who are interested. The group will depart for home on Sunday after breakfast in the hotel.

Cost of the trip is $5,825 per person, which includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations, breakfasts, all dinners outside of London, all sightseeing per itinerary and entrance fees, transportation, tour guides and service charges and taxes. A non-refundable deposit of $750 is due by Oct. 1. Final payment is due Nov. 28.
