One-hundred-and-sixty colleges and universities from around the country and the globe were on Darlington’s campus Monday, Sept. 17, for the school’s annual College Fair in the Huffman Athletic Center.

“We are so fortunate that all of these colleges recognize Darlington's reputation and are willing to travel all the way to Rome, Ga., just to visit with our students," said Sam Moss, dean of college guidance. "We are also pleased that the students from Unity Christian School were able to attend our fair again this year."

All of Darlington’s Upper School students attended the fair, giving freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of schools and juniors and seniors a chance to zero in on their top choices.

“The college fair is really helpful for seniors,” said Kathryn Chunn (‘19), senior boarding student from Acworth, Ga. “It puts over 100 colleges in one room which makes comparing schools really easy, and students also get important one-on-one contact with representatives. I discovered a myriad of new schools that fit my personal college goals. I had a teacher alumnus introduce me to a representative, which was really cool because I feel like it made me stand out. I had some really nice conversations with many of the representatives about scholarships, masters programs, internships and general admissions. It relieved some of my college stress because I was able to get direct answers right then.”

The Darlington College Fair was attended by many southern universities like the University of Georgia, Auburn, and Clemson as well as distant schools such as the University of Michigan, University of California-Berkeley, and University of Maryland.

“We were happy to welcome some 'big-name' colleges from many parts of the country like Colgate, Purdue, Syracuse, Bryn Mawr, and Mt. Holyoke,” said Moss. “We even had colleges from abroad, including the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland and the American University of Paris."

Jeremy Boyce, an admission representative from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas had a great experience as he spoke with students.

“We had a really great college fair today at Darlington School!” said Boyce. “I had a lot of great students come through, especially for our school, which isn’t as well known. The students were so well prepared with questions and were willing to explore a new opportunity with us. I really enjoyed getting to know them and they seemed to be really on top of things from the freshmen all the way up to the seniors.”

John Palmer Rea, regional admissions counselor for the University of Mississippi agreed.

“Today was such a great event that had so many great students from across grade levels, which is something that I really enjoyed,” said Rea. “I also loved how knowledgeable the seniors were and had a lot of them that had already been to campus or knew people that were at Ole Miss. I really enjoyed all of the students’ questions and was overwhelmed with interest which is always good.”

John Ugbe, a senior boarding student from Nigeria, was surprised with the number of schools he was able to meet with in person.

“My projected major is Industrial Design, which a lot of schools don't offer,” said Ugbe. “I think Darlington did a great job of bringing a diverse range of colleges to the fair. Overall, I was able to meet with five out of the eight schools I'm applying to, so having the opportunity to speak with them (in person) gave me a leg up in the admission process.”

Junior boarding student Ashley Ithau from Orlando, Fla., was thrilled with the number and variety of colleges and universities in attendance.

“I think that the college fair was amazing,” said Ithau. “It was a great opportunity to window shop many universities with ease. I really enjoyed the way we were able to have quick conversations with real advisers who could actually give us specific answers.”

“I really enjoyed the hospitality shown here at Darlington School,” said Connor Rund, associate dean of admissions and regional representative in the south for Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden Sydney, Va. “I was very impressed by the student body. They really represented Darlington very well and showed the type of preparation that Darlington gives its students and the leg up that they will have at the next level.”
