Performing Arts

Our students take the stage as early as pre-K, which helps them build their confidence and communication skills. Lower School students perform annually in grade-level musicals as well as seasonal instrumental and choral programs. With a String Program that begins in first grade, our young instrumentalists are well-prepared for Band in fourth grade.

Students can continue to be involved in vocal and instrumental music during their Middle School years by participating in the Middle School Orchestra, Jazz Band or Chorus, all of which perform at a variety of on and off-campus events and competitions.

At the Upper School, the performing arts become even more of a curricular focus with courses offered in AP Music Theory, Concert Choir, Ladies’ and Men’s Chorale, Drama, Musical Theater, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble. Five vocal ensembles and 9 instrumental ensembles are available to students in grades 9-12, some of which are audition only. Each of these groups also performs during seasonal concerts as well as other events and competitions, and many have received regional and national recognition. In addition, the annual winter musical – which is often open to students in all grades depending on the selection – includes additional vocal and instrumental opportunities. Past productions have included “Hello, Dolly!” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Anything Goes.” Students may also choose to participate in Darlington’s Instrumental Music Conservatory, a year-round program for serious instrumentalists that draws upon the expertise of local and regional performing artists.
