In light of the recent staph outbreaks reported by schools across the United States, Darlington’s Student Health Center staff felt it was important to share information on preventative measures that may be taken to decrease the chance of getting and/or spreading an infection.
I am writing to inform you that the Georgia Department of Human Resources has added new items to the requirements for immunization for school attendance, effective July 1, 2007. Darlington students will need to meet these requirements for the 2007-08 school year.
The American Academy of Pediatricians has also issued new recommendations for immunization that include additional items beyond those required for school attendance. Please discuss these additional items with your child’s pediatrician. Click here for further information. A summary of the new school requirements is listed below by grade level.
Pre-K: Children less than 5 years old must meet requirements for PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine). A new Form 3231 showing compliance with this new requirement and the previous requirements is required for 2007-08. If your child’s current Form 3231 does not expire until after the school year starts, the child has until the expiration date of the Form 3231 to obtain the required vaccinations and submit a new Form 3231.
Kindergarten: Children entering kindergarten must meet new requirements for a second dose of mumps vaccine* and for a second dose of varicella vaccine**. A new Form 3231 showing compliance with this new requirement and the previous requirements is required for 2007-08. If your child’s current Form 3231 is marked “Complete for School Attendance,” a new Form 3231 is not required if completion of the new immunization requirements for mumps and varicella are documented.
Sixth Grade and Higher: Children entering sixth grade or higher must meet new requirements for a second dose of mumps vaccine* and a second dose of varicella vaccine**. A new Form 3231 is required.
Additional Notes: Children born on or after Jan. 1, 2006 will need to show proof of immunization for Hepatitis A or serological proof of immunity on their Form 3231 when they enter school.
Please call me at 706-236-0428 if you have any questions.
