On Aug. 10, Darlington’s faculty and staff participated in the Stewards of Children training program, making the school the largest organization trained in this program thus far in Floyd County. The program, created by national nonprofit organization Darkness to Light, was presented in partnership with the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy.

“Darlington’s current school policies are focused on respectful boundaries, training, communications, and reporting procedures for both students and faculty and are meant to create a safe environment for our students to learn, grow and excel.” said Head of School, Brent Bell.  “Stewards of Children is an excellent addition to our training. It is an excellent program and I hope that other organizations will also participate.”

Darkness to Light seeks to empower adults to prevent child sexual abuse through programs that raise awareness and educate adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The training centers around a mix of survivor stories, expert advice, and practical guidance for the purpose of helping one learn about making choices, taking risks, and supporting each other to prevent child sexual abuse.

Darkness to Light highlights 5 Steps to Protecting our Children throughout the training:

  • Learn the Facts

  • Minimize Opportunity

  • Talk About It

  • Recognize the Signs

  • React Responsibly

"Darlington School is really to be commended for their commitment and engagement with regard to training all their staff and for connecting even further to help make a difference in the community,” said Steve Fallin, regional prevention coordinator for the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy. “Darlington's administration has reached out for technical assistance to make sure they have done a thorough policy and procedure update and review. They have established clear guidelines for their child abuse reporting protocols and have created a Code of Conduct that is signed by all of their staff. It has been a pleasure working with everyone at Darlington to help ensure the safety of all the children they serve.”
