Why Fall for the Arts?

Fall for the Arts 2017 is just around the corner and as we make plans for this annual event that focuses on all of our students as artists, I am reminded of the many reasons why we take this day to celebrate fine arts at Darlington. I first think of the fun that we have each year, the food we eat, the performances and artwork we see on display and the many activities that we get to participate in throughout the day.

We take the whole day and experience the arts, but for what reason? Because the arts provide our students with an educational experience that is grounded in the Darlington portrait of a graduate and the skills and curriculum of the programs we offer. Taking a day to celebrate the arts allows us to fulfill our obligation to students in support of the experiences in the classroom.

Our students are exhibiting the goals of our curriculum and portrait throughout the day during Fall for the Arts and here is a list of ways that this is happening for our students.

Students are pursuing multi-faceted goals by sharing interests, gifts and talents to support and document the events. This happens as students take pictures for media arts, lead an art activity or perform for audiences in the cove.

Students are building self-confidence as they present artwork and performances throughout the day.

Students are transferring knowledge as they participate in art activities that require the transferring of familiar to unfamiliar.

Students are enriching and deepening their experience through cultural and self understanding as they share in activities from different cultures and build new connections with other students and faculty.

Students work to improve cognition and communication as they perform or present. This  requires multiple skills working simultaneously communicating verbally, non-verbally, physically and emotionally.

Students work to embracing a challenge while welcoming feedback as they try something they’ve never done before and share experiences that build support from one to another.

Students seek and analyze the perspectives of multiple persons as they find opportunities to critique and discuss the artwork and performances around them.

Students are taking risks by participating in activities and performances and sharing their passions, skills and talents.

Students and teachers support one another as a community as they come together for this special day of experiences.

Students practice having a growth mindset by looking at new ways to accomplish something and allowing the use of intrinsic motivation to complete a task.

Students create and collaborate whether participating in the "Trash to Treasure Fashion Show" or by painting a mural.

So join us for Fall for the Arts 2017! The learning and fun takes place on the Morris Chapel lawn from noon until 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. The event is sponsored by the Fine Arts Booster Club and offers wonderful food, art exhibits and performances along with activities for all ages. All art activities and performances are free with a minimal cost required for food from our community bake sale, Kaleidosno, Frios and a few other vendors. Arm bands are available for purchase at $5 and $10 increments and a T-shirt is also available for purchase to commemorate the event. Click here to learn more about this event and how you can participate.
