Marissa Toney has joined the Darlington Community as the strength and speed development intern.

Marissa is a welcome addition to the Darlington athletic staff,” said Eddie Guth, athletic director. “With her background and knowledge in speed and strength development, her presence in the department is greatly appreciated and welcome.”

Toney holds a B.S. in Exercise Science from Berry College, where she has served as strength and conditioning supervisor for the past two years. She is currently pursuing a M.S. in Physical Education with emphasis in exercise through an online program at the University of North Georgia.

“I discovered my passion for exercise science in college,” said Toney. “I have always enjoyed being active and fit, and I played varsity basketball in high school and college. I was introduced to weightlifting in the eighth grade and participated all throughout high school because I noticed the improvements in my performance as well as the way that I felt. It wasn't until I chose my college major and began taking my upper-level classes, that I really discovered my passion for the science part of of exercise. I enjoyed learning about what was happening in the body throughout and as a result of exercise.”

Toney holds a USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Certification, is a certified lifeguard, and has interned with CrossFit programs in Rome and Flowery Branch, Ga.

As I take on this position, I am excited about motivating and encouraging the students, specifically the female students, to lift and train properly,” she said. “I want to help these young women get rid of their misconceptions about weight training. Lifting weights is something they can do for a lifetime to help them stay healthy.”

In her free time, Toney enjoys being in the gym and getting a workout in for herself. She was married in June and loves to spend time with her husband, Dennis, a teacher and coach at Rome High School.

“I believe Darlington is a good fit for me because I believe wholeheartedly in the school's mission: To empower students to learn with passion, act with integrity and serve with respect,” said Toney. “The phrase that drew me the most was ‘to learn with passion.’ I hope that all Darlington students can find at least one subject that they are passionate about and dive into it completely.”
