Remembering the Value of Play

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, there are seven definitions for the word “play,” ranging from “one’s turn in a game” to “a dramatic composition.” Thinking back to when I was a child, the definition that I so fondly remember is “recreational activity; especially: the spontaneous activity of children.”

We learn so much through play. We learn to solve problems; we learn how to get along with others; we learn creativity and exploration.

On rainy days, I would play “school” with my sister and cousins. I, of course, would always want to be the teacher. I discovered how to make the best dirt and water cakes in the neighborhood. I remember the pride I felt when my mom told me I was the best cook ever.

During school, I remember sitting in my classroom looking out the window anticipating recess time. I loved to swing. I would race everyone to be the first one to the swing. I would swing the entire recess. I can still feel the breeze when I think about swinging on the playground.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of keeping a sweet 4-year-old. We spent the day playing. We blew bubbles, made bracelets and made shapes with play dough. She asked if I had any other toys around the house. Well, my own kids are 20 and 22, so all of their toys are stored in closets and the attic.

Without blinking an eye, she went into the kitchen and got two bowls (one big and one little), a candle, and a measuring cup. She began giving her toy dog a bath. The big bowl was the tub, the candle was the soap, the small bowl was for mixing the soap, the measuring cup was used to pour the soap into the tub, and balls of play dough were for the bubbles. When she finished, she had the cleanest dog I have ever seen. She was so proud.

I’m certain all of us can recall our own amazing days of play. We must remember the value of play and how important it is for kids to be creative and have fun. Lest we forget, they have a small window of time to play and be carefree.
