On Nov. 4, the Technology Association of Georgia and the TAG Education Collaborative honored top STEM educators, schools and companies in the state, naming Darlington School the winner in the high school category.

The Georgia STEM Education Awards recognize schools, programs, and companies for outstanding efforts and achievements in supporting and promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Education in Georgia.

On hand to accept the award on behalf of Darlington was Assistant Head of School for Academic Resources Stefan Eady and Rebekah Kinney, technology integration coordinator for the school.

“To me, the most impressive aspect of Darlington being chosen for this award is that we were considered among schools with very distinct and often separate STEM programs while at Darlington we continue to work on integrating the best of STEM into our entire curriculum,” said Eady. “We are just as concerned with higher-level skills such as design, development, collaboration, creation, and critical thinking as we are with the technical skills most associate with STEM. These are the kind of skills that will benefit all of our students, not just those that go into STEM careers.”

Kinney cited the variety of STEM integrated curriculum and activities as to what made Darlington stand out among finalists. “Darlington has a variety of initiatives that build STEM in the day-to-day work of students and teachers," she said. "Students benefit from hands-on opportunities at the DarFarm and annual Insect Expo as well as the 1:1 technology integration program that starts with even the youngest students. Design thinking initiatives are deployed across all curriculum and students take this aspect even further through robotics competitions and utilizing the school’s makerspaces.”

Eady added, “I see success when we have language students learning 3-D modeling while creating a game to teach culture; geometry students creating videos to teach about mathematicians; English students working through the design process of creating an app to help analyze literary characters; or students in an iPeriod class creating an app for students to keep up with their schedules, grades, and assignments.

"I hope this award inspires our students and teachers to continue to look for ways to be innovative, to integrate STEM into more areas of the school, and to find new opportunities for using our skills and effort to solve real-world problems.”
