A Bridge to College—A Workshop for Seniors

As the parent of a senior, you have made it through the year—almost.

During your child’s senior year, you have discussed the Common App, FAFSA, college visits, college acceptances and college selections. Now that you are finished with the decision-making, your child is ready for college.

When I think of my children going off to college, they knew about fraternities, and where to get football tickets, and where to eat.  Unfortunately in the hectic senior year, we often forget one piece of information: college is about the academics. Sending your student off to college means that they must know how to get the most out of orientation, register for classes, and understand terminology.

College may have changed some since you were there and they are going to have to navigate this process without you there. In order to help with this time of transition, on May 24 [and now June 15] we are offering “A Bridge to College"—a workshop for graduating seniors. This three-hour activity based seminar will allow students to learn about “drop-add,” why you need to take 12 hours minimum, and balancing your time. This workshop also allows students to have another session with AEI presenters after orientation or during the first week of college to make sure everything is off to a good start.

One of the most important concepts that students need to learn is organization. The structure of an upper school/high school is so different from a college structure. Student expectations on time management, note-taking and maintaining a dorm room can create much angst among college freshmen. Our program will provide students with support about what to expect and how to address the issues that may arise.

We encourage any senior student to attend this seminar. This is an opportune time to discuss the excitement and worries that they face in the next few weeks and months. In addition, they will have resources if they do have difficulties during the transition.

Due to the amount of information provided, we will need to limit the class to 30 students. Attendees can be Darlington and non-Darlington graduates, but pre-registration is required for all participants to secure a spot.
