ELA-8 to host two guest authors in March

The ELA-8 division of Darlington School will host two guest authors in the month of March. Author Sue Sehgal will visit Darlington on Monday, March 2 to talk about her book “A Bucket of Blessings,” and author/photographer Patsy Smith Roberts will be on campus Wednesday, March 18 to share stories, photos and artifacts that relate to her series of children’s books. Both authors will read selections and present inside the Joanne G. Yancey Library at Thatcher Hall.

"Author visits not only get students excited about reading, but can really inspire creativity and risk-taking,” said Liz Overberg, ELA-8 librarian. “When students hear an author talk about the writing process and the journey from ‘idea’ to ‘publication,’ it sends a strong message about working hard and following a dream."

Sue Sehgal’s “A Bucket of Blessings” is a New York Times bestselling picture book, and is based on a legend from the author’s native India. Her visit with students in the Early Learning Academy through second grade will coincide with Read Across America Day, which celebrates reading and encourages different interactive activities like guest authors to help bring stories to life. Read Across America Day is an annual event, celebrated every March 2 on Dr. Suess’ birthday.

Wildlife photographer and children’s author Patsy Smith Roberts will return to the Darlington campus on Wednesday, March 18, presenting to students in the Early Learning Academy through fifth grade. Roberts' fiction works are based on photographs that she has taken on various trips around the world. The author will also use animal sounds to help tell the stories, as well as artifacts she has collected including a warthog tusk and a lion’s claw. Copies of Roberts’ books will be available for sale at the event, including “Billy Ray, the Adventures of a Vervet Monkey.”

"The annual author visit was a beloved tradition at the Lower School for many years, and it was very important to the Library Services department to continue that tradition at Thatcher Hall," said Overberg.
