How long have you been at Darlington?
I've been working as an employee at Darlington School for almost 19 years. Before I was employed by Darlington, I taught school for 8 years in the Floyd County school system and then had our two sons, Drew and Barrett. After they were born, I was a stay-at-home mom for 16 years and volunteered in every capacity in the Lower, Middle and Upper schools. Both of our sons attended Darlington from kindergarten through the 12th grade. I also substituted at the Lower School, so Darlington has been my home away from home for a very long time.
What do you enjoy the most about your job at Darlington?
I've always enjoyed working at Darlington and meeting new people when they come to visit. Since I have been involved with the Admission Tiger Expert Program, I must say that getting to know our students and listening to our "Experts" share their experiences with other students and their families is the greatest blessing to me. Each student and story is so different. They all are filled with examples of ways the student has grown because of other students, faculty or staff that have touched their lives. It reaffirms to me constantly that Darlington is truly a special place and that I have been blessed beyond measure to be here.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of school?
Playing with our 4 grandchildren is the greatest pleasure for my husband and me. They are 7, 6, 5, and 4 years old and we recently found out we are having another in July! We travel to be with them as often as possible. Being a grandmother is the greatest gift in the world!
Also, I used to love to play tennis but now I truly love playing cards with my friends.
What is your favorite Darlington tradition?
Wow, there are so many wonderful traditions here. I think I would have to say my "new" favorite tradition is RUMPUS. Watching all the students, faculty and staff pulling together and having so much fun brings smiles to all our faces.
Mrs. Fleming was both a complete joy to interview and a constant ray of sunshine, even though she recently lost her voice.
