Serving Our Community Through Spelling?!

Tannika King | April 30, 2014 | 338 views

I love to hear about members of our school family doing great things in our community. Just last week, I discovered that three of our faculty members will be participating in an event on Friday that combines two of my passions -- servant leadership and spelling.

Yes, spelling. (You may be laughing by this point, but one has to be quite fond of spelling and grammar to have the job I have here at Darlington!)

This Friday at 7 p.m. at the DeSoto Theatre, our very own ELA-8 Dean of Students Jennifer Helbing, English Department Chairwoman Beth Wilson and Associate Dean of College Guidance Ivy Brewer will represent Darlington
in the Harbin Clinic Adult Spell Off to benefit Harbor House (The Northwest Georgia Child Advocacy Center).

And the really cool part is -- they are actually defending their championship title from last year. That's right, we have a team of super spellers!

For those who may not know, Harbor House provides a child-friendly environment to assist families involved in the many steps of a child abuse investigation. When there are allegations of abuse, they provide intervention with a child-friendly atmosphere to interview the child as well as support groups for those families where abuse has occurred. They also coordinate prevention programs that help put an end to abuse before it begins.

To support Darlington's team in the Adult Spell Off, simply click here, scroll down to "2014 Participating Teams" at the bottom of the page and click it, and cast your vote ($1 per vote) for "To Bee or Not to Bee." As of today, Darlington's team is in the Top 5 in terms of online votes!

If you'd like to attend the Spell Off, you will be able to purchase tickets for $10 each at the door on Friday. (Tickets are FREE for students and children under 18.)
For tickets or more information, call 706-235-5437. All proceeds from voting and ticket sales benefit Harbor House.
