Darlington's Math Team took first in Class A at the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics' State Mathematics Tournament, held at Middle Georgia State College (formerly known as Macon College) on April 27.

"Only 36 schools of all sizes from the entire state are invited," said math teacher Lynn Cox. "Invitations are based on how the school has done in local math competitions during the school year. Darlington is fortunate to have garnered many trophies from this year's competitions."

Darlington scored 661 points, which was approximately 200 points higher than the Class A second-place finisher, Brookstone. Darlington finished 15th overall.

The competition consisted of three events. First, each student took a 50-question written test that included 45 multiple choice questions and five response questions. Next was the ciphering round, during which each team member solved problems and was awarded points based on his or her correct answers.

"If the answer is submitted within the first minute, then that team member gets 10 points; correct answers submitted before two minutes are up gets 5 points," explained Cox.

The third round was a team round, in which all four students were able to collaborate in order to solve 12 problems within 15 minutes. These problems were worth 25 points each.

"One of our seniors, Du Zhang, placed 49th individually out of all schools from 6A to A and GISA schools, too," Cox said. "I am so proud of all of our Math Team members!"

Other members of the Math Team are senior Vikram Singh, junior Zhou (Joe) Fang and sophomore Dingding Wang. This trip was sponsored by Upper School Tiger Pride.
