Instant Gratification: Blood Drive on Wednesday

Lea Duncan | April 16, 2012 | 126 views

This is not about denouncing  “this generation” as “they” seek immediate happiness through artificial means.  This is a plea to answer a constant need, and be instantly gratified at the same time.  It is a cry for blood donation!  Repeatedly, donors say that giving blood makes them feel exhilarated—because “it just feels good to help others.”

This Wednesday, April 18, we will all have the opportunity to literally give the gift that keeps on giving.  From 2-7 p.m., the Blood Assurance bus will be at the McCallie-Kennedy Library at the Upper School enabling all of us to try to make a difference.

Hopefully, you’ve seen the beaming faces of Madeline Gaffney and Jordan Muschamp on our website, or better yet, in person. These two young people have already been through more challenges than most of us will face in a lifetime, but you’d never know it by looking at them.  Each of us can honor their courage and determination by donating blood on Wednesday and show them by a small sacrifice on our part how much we support them in their valiant efforts.

If this isn’t reason enough to compel you to action, consider the following:

1)      1 pint of blood can save 3 lives—yours could be that pint;

2)      Blood used in emergencies is already on shelves before the incidents occur—hopefully;

3)      Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States will need blood to live;

4)      Every second, your body replaces 8 million red cells with new ones—you’ll never miss them;

5)      The only way blood can be made available is through donation—yours and mine!

Now, eat well during the day Wednesday, drink plenty of liquids, and roll up your sleeves to honor Madeline, Jordan, and countless other warriors.  This is the day to make a difference.  This is the day to act.  This is the day for instant gratification through donation!
