The Power of One: Grand/Special Day Theme is a Big Hit

Last Friday was a very special day at the Lower School with a record turnout of grandparents, parents, and friends. We celebrated our Grand/Special Day with a salute to our veterans. This was the singular idea of Ashley Henry, our music teacher in her second year at Darlington, who rallied the faculty and students to embrace this theme.

The students sang patriotic songs, recited the Gettysburg Address, and brought back memories from all of the major wars that our nation fought in to preserve our freedom. During the performance, veterans and their widows and widowers were honored with a yellow rose tagged with “Thank You For Your Service” and delivered by our PK-4 students. Our band and strings students along with the third-grade bell choir, and the percussion group added lots of flair and emotion with their performances. Our Tiger PRIDE moms came through, as always, providing assistance with the refreshment stations and decorations.

Special thanks go out to Kim Price, chairperson, for an outstanding job designing the programming (posters, invitations, and handouts) and decorating the stage, along with her helpers Tiffany Shelton, Tressa Baggett, and Missie Tolbert. I would also like to thank Jennifer Moore for putting together a wonderful display of art by our students as well as Annie and Will Camp for their participation with this year’s event. At the end of the performance, the audience stood up and clapped for our students. This standing ovation was a rewarding tribute to our students and faculty for a job well done!

As a reminder to parents, our students will be taking their spring achievement test (ERB/eCTP4) for the next four weeks. There will be a grade testing each week starting this week with grade two. All of the testing will be done online and results will be sent home on the Monday following the testing. Testing begins each morning at 8:15 a.m. Parents can be a huge help by making sure their children are at school on time, get a good night’s sleep, and eat a hearty breakfast each day.

Our fourth-grade students will be competing this week in their annual Science Fair, which will take place in the gym on Thursday, April 19. The winners from our fair are invited to participate in the Independent School Science Fair to be held the following week at Berry Elementary.
