Good Happenings at the Lower School

On Friday, parents of students in grades will receive the results of the final Darlington Writes assessment given in March. The purpose of this program is to develop successful writers at each grade level starting in first grade. Our students have the opportunity to produce a well-constructed essay using persuasive, expository, narrative and letter writing skills. These practice assessments have allowed our teachers to observe and evaluate their students’ mastery of writing skills in a timed format. From their teachers, the students receive constructive comments and praise for their work.

Parents should be very proud of their child’s progress as this program continues to build upon prior knowledge and expertise. The packets do not need to be returned since copies were placed in each child’s SSP file for next year’s teacher to further the process of developing competent and skilled writers.

This past Tuesday at our weekly assembly, Jennifer Scott presented a slide show and video of her family’s trip to rural Guatemala during spring break. Thanks to our Lower School and a local Girl Scout troop, over 100 water filters were installed in two days. Our students witnessed firsthand the efforts of their sacrifice and generosity and how it benefitted a family of eight. It was inspiring for them to see what life is like outside of Darlington in a developing country. Thank you, Jennifer, for your and your family’s work in this endeavor.

I would also like to thank Tiger PRIDE for its generosity in purchasing a new LC projector, surround sound and a wireless mic, all of which were installed over spring break in Tiger Hall. We now have the capacity to plug in our laptops or iPads and have a wonderful presentation. The new LC projector has the right level of lumens which visually projects clearly.

Next Friday, March 30, is our annual “Donuts for Dads” event which starts at 7:45 a.m. in the gym. If you are a new family and this is your first experience, please note that if dad is out of town and cannot attend, a mom, grandparent, neighbor or friend can come in his place so that no child feels left out. At 8:15, the students and their dads or guests will visit the classrooms for 30 minutes. The program ends at 8:45, at which time classes will resume following a normal schedule.

At Tuesday's assembly, I also reviewed the proper shoes/sneakers that need to be worn at school. The information is available online in the Student Handbook. Everyone has been very supportive in getting back on track with conservative colors and appropriate, safe footwear. A detailed letter will be emailed to you within the next three days. Thank you for your support.
