Seniors Ansley McDurmon and Cole Miller have been selected as Darlington’s recipients of the Vincent J. Dooley Award, which is given by Athletes for a Better World (ABW) in partnership with the Georgia High School Association to the male and female student who best demonstrate character, teamwork and citizenship.
“Ansley and Cole are very deserving of this award,” said Athletic Director Bob Stinchcomb. “Their positive attitudes, work ethic, sportsmanship, leadership abilities and contributions to life at Darlington have earned them this recognition. I am so proud of them, and I know they will represent our school well.”
McDurmon runs cross country and track. Last season, she was a member of the state champion cross country team. This season, she won region for the third time in her career and finished 11th at state. Last season in track, she placed third at state in the 3,200. She has been named to the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Team in both sports. A recipient of the D.A.R. Medal and the Sewanee Club Award, McDurmon has taken 20 Honors and AP classes. She is also a member of Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Gamma Chi Epsilon and Sociedad Honoraria Nacional de El Coronel. She is the daughter of Heather and Kelly McDurmon of Rome.
Miller plays baseball and is the team's representative to the "D" Club. He has been named to the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Baseball Team for three consecutive years. Last season, he was named Area Co-Player of the Year and he broke the school home run record with 14. He also plays 18U baseball for the East Cobb Astros. Miller has taken nine Honors and AP classes. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Sociedad Honoraria Nacional de El Coronel. He is also president of the "Y" Cabinet and a huddle leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Lynda and Doug Miller of Cave Spring, Ga.
As Darlington’s award recipients, McDurmon and Miller will compete with athletes from every high school in the state of Georgia for a four-year, $1,000 per year college scholarship, which will be presented this spring. Only one male and one female scholarship winner will be selected; these students will also receive $1,000 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice.
