The following Middle School dress days will not only be allowed, but also encouraged in observance of Red Ribbon Week Oct. 25-29:
Monday, Oct. 25: “Hooked on Books Not Drugs” – bring your favorite book
Tuesday, Oct. 26: “Too Cool for Drugs” – wear sunglasses
Wednesday, Oct. 27: “Put a Cap on Drugs” – wear hats
Thursday, Oct. 28: “Join the Fight Against Drugs” – wear camouflage
Friday, Oct. 29: “Hocus Pocus Drugs Aren’t My Focus” – dress for the Halloween Parade
Monday, Oct. 25 will also mark the beginning of the “I can, you can, we can” canned food drive at the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.
That afternoon, we will host a “SPIKE out drugs student/faculty volleyball game.” The student teams will be made up of the students who won the P.E. volleyball championships for their grade level.
Wednesday, Oct. 27, we will have a “Black out” event where certain students will agree to a day of silence to mark the loss of students their age who are statistically taken by drunk driving.
Please understand that the Red Ribbon Week celebration is not about stucco days or events. The purpose of this initiative is to involve students, parents and teachers in fun and meaningful drug prevention and awareness activities. These activities focus on changing the social and physical environments that allow substance abuse. By focusing on changing social norms (real or perceived), students are more likely to choose not to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
Environmental changes can be achieved through a collaborative effort by both the school and family communities. I encourage you to discuss drug prevention with your student(s). Perhaps, you can start the conversation by discussing the above-mentioned school activities. Also, remind your student(s) that they will be given the opportunity to earn Top Cash throughout the week for participation.
If you have any questions or concerns about a student’s involvement please feel free to contact me!
