Your child can significantly increase his or her English proficiency in just four weeks by participating in Darlington's summer ESL offerings. This program consists of 2-hour skills classes that focus on enhancing listening and speaking as well as improving reading and writing skills. The course also emphasizes the importance of study skills, including organizational methods, note-taking formats and test-taking strategies.
Small class size and skilled, supportive Darlington teachers are the keys to the success of our summer ESL program. Your student will receive 20 hours of ESL/TOEFL prep, with a 40-hour course available upon request. An optional TOEFL official test is available during the final week for an additional fee. Testing will be administered upon arrival, and your student will be carefully evaluated to make sure he or she is placed at the correct level of instruction. For example, if your child has stronger aural/oral skills than reading/writing skills, he or she will be placed in appropriately challenging classes in each concentration. Teachers will meet regularly to discuss your student's progress, and the program director will facilitate changes as needed.
Tara Inman, director of Darlington's ESL program, has more than 15 years of teaching/educational experience, nine of which have been in the ESL classroom. All of our faculty members involved in the summer ESL program have extensive experience teaching English as a Second Language during the school year, and are excited to add a summer session tailored to meet the needs of international students.
