Learning does not have to end when summer begins. In fact, we believe the summer months present a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to approach education from a completely different perspective.
Summer Scholars is not a condensed version of Darlington School, but rather an informal, goal-driven learning experience. With many unique course offerings, the program provides inquiring minds with a three-week journey into two topics that spark their interest. Like-minded students are placed under the guidance of some of Darlington’s most talented instructors in a challenging and invigorating environment.
Intellectually rewarding opportunities abound as inquiry-based methods are combined with collaborative classroom settings. Regional experts and professionals share their career insights with students through field trips and on-site demonstrations. Day-long instruction periods, offered on alternate days, encourage full immersion into each lesson and thus a more complete understanding. Instead of hearing and regurgitating, students are guided toward concepts, where application is the ultimate evaluation. Small class sizes allow highly individualized instruction and active student participation. Every child works toward a final project that requires working knowledge of the course material as well as effective teamwork skills. Finally, a vibrant residential program with daily physical activities and evening entertainment promotes social interaction, independence and personal responsibility in a fun, camp-like atmosphere.
To be considered for admission, students must complete an application and submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other community leader. A current school transcript must also be submitted to demonstrate solid academic standing.
