Frequent Questions
- Can my child attend multiple camps at Darlington in one summer?
- Absolutely, as long as space is available and they are not at the same time.
- Where do campers eat and sleep?
- Campers live in Darlington’s six student houses, used by resident students during the academic year. These houses are fully air-conditioned with all the modern amenities of a 21st-century home. At Darlington Summer Camps, you won’t have to worry about mosquitoes and summer heat keeping you awake at night. When it comes to camp, sleep is as important as eating and having fun. The better you sleep, the healthier you are, and the harder you can play the next day.
We understand the importance of good nutrition and a well-balanced diet. Campers will eat three nutritious meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in Darlington School’s Dodd Dining Room.
- How are the boys and girls placed in the houses, and how many campers share one room?
- Girls and boys are separated by floor in the camper houses. Two to three campers of similar age are assigned a room, which is furnished with single beds, chest of drawers and storage closets. Staff will reside with the campers in the houses and are available at all times.
- Is there a laundry service at Darlington Summer Programs?
- Because all Darlington Summer Camps are one week in duration, we doubt your child will require laundry service. But it is camp, and clothes can get dirty fast. Should the need arise, each house has a washer and dryer that camp directors and counselors are happy to help your child learn to use.
- What if my child takes medication?
- All medication will be checked into the camp infirmary on opening day. Darlington’s camp nurse will manage and administer all camper medication.
- Will I be able to communicate with my child during camp? Can I send care packages?
- Yes. Handwritten letters and care packages are strongly encouraged. Also available to camper parents is Darlington Summer Camps’ Intranet service. Each day, we will post pictures from the day’s events to Darlington’s Web site so that you may see what’s happening at camp. Through this service, you will also be able to send e-mails to your child, which will be distributed each day during rest hour/mail call. This service is offered to parents at no extra charge.
- Who are the Darlington Summer Camps directors and counselors, and what is their training?
- Darlington Summer Camps are directed and operated by Darlington faculty and alumni as well as highly qualified friends of the Darlington family. A camp’s staff is what determines success. The impressive credentials, experience and respect for Darlington possessed by all of our camp staff ensure that your child will come home happy and enthused for the upcoming school year and the next summer.
- How are campers supervised in the house?
- A counselor-to-camper ratio of 1:5 ensures proper supervision at all times. To make the house life fun, camp directors teach their campers proper organization and hygiene via friendly competition, such as bunk cleanup competitions for honor awards at the end of the session.
- Does my child have to participate in every activity?
- Absolutely not. While we encourage all campers to challenge themselves, we fully understand that all activities are not for everyone. We want your child to be happy and feel confident in his or her decision to choose AND refuse certain activities.
- How are the bathrooms/showers arranged? Do they have hot water?
- Each house floor has its own bathroom and shower house—one for the girls and one for the boys. And, yes, there is plenty of hot water.
- Will general supplies be sold at camp if my child forgets something?
- Yes. Darlington Summer Camps will open the camp store as needed for campers to purchase essentials like toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap and many other miscellaneous items that each of us tends to forget from time to time. The camp store will also have Darlington School T-shirts, hats, postcards, etc. for sale.
- What health services are available?
- Darlington Summer Camps employs a full-time camp nurse who works in the School’s infirmary during camp hours. Darlington also maintains two local physicians on call for further medical attention as needed. Floyd Medical Center and Redmond Regional Hospital are located in Rome, only a short distance from the campus. Additionally, all campers must have a completed health form on file in the infirmary.
- Can my child request his/her bunkmate for the session?
- Absolutely. We understand that camp is the ultimate opportunity to spend time away from home with your best friend or friends. Typically, two to three campers are assigned to each room, but in special circumstances, if requested, we can facilitate more by using bunk beds.
- Do we need to send bed sheets and/or other items with our child that the camp does not provide?
- Upon enrollment, we will send you a list of all items your child will need to bring to camp. This detailed list will include sheets, towels, clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc.
- Is all equipment provided by Darlington Summer Camps?
- Upon enrollment, you will receive a list of necessary items. Campers are welcome to bring their own sports-specific equipment such as a softball bat, glove or tennis racquet.
