Four selected for High School Leadership Rome
8/17/2009, Lakeside Lines
Sean Healy, Hiram Johnson, Jack Kelly and Zachary Martin will represent Darlington School in the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s High School Leadership Rome program for 2009-10.

“Students are educated on many aspects of our community, increasing their awareness of opportunities as well as challenges we face in Rome and Floyd County,” said Al Hodge, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. “A diverse group of students from city, county and our private school systems are selected by the committee based on academics, leadership and community service. This year’s class will have an exciting learning experience as they travel throughout our community.”

Topics of interest will include law and government, healthcare, economic development and transportation, education, servant leadership/volunteerism, quality of life, and industry/business and media.

Kelly said he looks forward to building his leadership skills and learning more about the community. “My sisters both participated in High School Leadership Rome, and encouraged me to do so,” he said. “I hope to learn more leadership skills and meet people from different schools in Rome/Floyd County. My family has been in Floyd County since the 1840s, and I am proud to be a citizen as well. I want to learn more about the way government works in my community.”

Johnson is also looking forward to the experience. “I applied to participate in this program because I wanted to both become a better leader in all areas of my life – at home, in my church, at my school or in the community at large – and to get to know the other student leaders in this area,” he said. “I think that leadership matters now more than ever; in these chaotic times, people need someone to look to for guidance. I hope to gain a better knowledge of how to lead others in my life, and – at times – how to humble myself to be led by others. I want to learn more about my community because I hope to be a force of positive change within it and to contribute to its growth, well-being and future leadership.”
