Maintaining good grades at Darlington is hard enough for students. Throw in participating in sports and it gets even harder. But for sophomore Lindsay Evans, the hard work has paid off in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena.
The Darlington three-sport athlete has seen success in basketball, cross country and track in her two years as a Lady Tiger. A few weeks ago at the state cross country meet in Carrollton, Evans finished 29th overall to help her team finish seventh in the standings. She helped lead the basketball team to a Sweet 16 appearance as a freshman last year. Now, as she is getting ready for her sophomore basketball season, Evans will be looked at as a team leader as she is the only sophomore on team of eight freshmen.
On Monday, Evans sat down with the RN-T to talk about the upcoming basketball season, her time at Darlington so far and juggling athletics and academics among other topics. Here is a sample of what she had to say:
RN-T: First, let’s talk about cross country. How do you feel your team performed at the state meet a few weeks ago and how pleased were you with your individual performance?
EVANS: Our team did very well. We came in seventh, which was worse than we did last year, but there was better competition this year. For example, a freshman won it and second place was also a freshman. Individually, I ran almost the same time as I did last year, but I was farther back because there was better competition.
RN-T: Now that cross country is over, how hard is it to go straight into preparation for basketball?
EVANS: Well, there was two weeks where I had to go from cross country to basketball, and then go home and do schoolwork. So it was tough trying to do all three at the same time, but I feel like I handled it well. It was only two weeks, and my dad always says you can handle a Grizzly Bear for two weeks if you have to. I got through it, but it was rough.
RN-T: Being the only sophomore on the team, do you consider yourself a leader and how do you handle that responsibility?
EVANS: I do consider myself a leader. I think the girls really look up to me. I’m here for them, and I hope that I’m the leader that they need.
RN-T: Last year, the team made a run to the Sweet 16 in the playoffs. What are your expectations entering this season?
EVANS: I would like to make it to the Sweet 16 again. That would be a huge accomplishment especially with the young team we have this year. And if we could make it farther, that would be great too.
RN-T: How tough is it to play three sports and still maintain a good academic standing?
EVANS: It’s very rough especially at Darlington where academics are the No. 1 priority. There’s several nights where I’m up until 1 a.m. studying and have to be back up at 6 a.m. for school. Then I don’t get home until 7 p.m. most nights. I’ve handled it pretty well though.
RN-T: What has been your best memory in athletics so far, and only being a sophomore, what do you hope to accomplish in the next few years?
EVANS: I’ve had many great moments, but probably my favorite was making the RN-T All-Area Basketball Team as a freshman, and as the only freshman. I would like to do that for three more years, and I would like to make the state team maybe my junior or senior year.
