Darlington School was notified yesterday that juniors Hannah Tillman and Anna Kipp, Rome businessman and Darlington parent Gary Tillman, and Rome High student Rachel Hostetler were involved in a plane crash near St. Augustine, Fla. The group was headed to the Bahamas on an aircraft piloted by Mr. Tillman.
The St. John's, Fla., Marine Rescue and the Coast Guard found Anna and Rachel in the water near where they believed the plane went down. The two were rushed to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, where Kipp was pronounced dead on arrival. Hostetler was stabilized and transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville.
"Chief Advancement Officer Joe Montgomery is on site in Jacksonville, and is keeping us updated on the progress," said Headmaster Tom Whitworth. "We are still hopeful that Hannah and Gary will be recovered, and we will let you know when we hear something further. Our priority right now is taking care of our students and families while we grieve the loss of Anna."
Darlington's Morris Chapel is open today from 9 a.m. to noon. Faculty and staff members will be available to support the students. Additionally, grief counselors will be on campus the week of Jan. 4 when the students return from their holiday break.
