Darlington students Shriya Garg, Sam Tullis, Zenith Han and Ian Kinney will present various STEM-related activities and projects at the Rome Floyd Chamber's Confluence conference this week. The two-day conference will take place Thursday and Friday at the Historic DeSoto Theatre in downtown Rome.

"STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) has become an important part of our curriculum," said Beth Wardlaw, technology integration specialist. "We believe that STEAM should not be a separate program or class, but integrated seamlessly into each classroom. We are very fortunate to have leaders and directors that believe in STEAM and support our mission."

Representing Darlington's middle grades, Garg will be talking about the WiFi Photobooth she created using Raspberry Pi, and Tullis will share a variety of innovative projects he has created. Upper School students Han and Kinney will talk about AutoCad and Darlington's robotics program. The students will present at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

"Our students have been creating amazing projects using a variety of modern technology and tools," said Wardlaw. "Confluence is a wonderful opportunity for these students to showcase all their hard work alongside professionals in the field of technology and innovation."

The Confluence lineup also features alumnus Lee Hanson ('80) and Dr. John Cowan, the parent of four Darlington students. Hanson, who will speak Thursday at 3:30 p.m., is the owner of Guardian Innovations Co., makers of a special protective football helmet and other safety gear. He will be immediately followed by Dr. Cowan, who will give a presentation about his invention, Flip Table, at 4:30 p.m.

The conference, which opens Thursday, will feature a Business After Hours reception at 5:30 p.m. at Forrest Place following the presentations. Confluence attendees will be admitted for free, and tickets are available at the door for other guests.

"Darlington will have several items on display at Business After Hours, including our SumoBots, DarBot 4100, our Big Game Controller, the Sphero Obstacle Course, VR Headsets and Quiver Sheets/iPads, so we invite guests to stop by and talk with us," Wardlaw. "It will be a fun, interactive display that highlights just a few of the many opportunities our students have to create and inspire through technology."

Darlington School is a proud sponsor of Confluence, a two-day conference of inspiration, innovation, and motivation for business leaders, technologists, educators, entrepreneurs and students.
