Light the Lake to return to Darlington March 31

March 3, 2017 | 1044 views

Luminaries line Silver Lake at last year's Light the Lake.

The Darlington Community will come together on Friday, March 31, to honor and remember the lives of those affected by cancer at the 9th annual Light the Lake, sponsored by the Class of 2019. Over the course of the evening, attendees will walk hundreds of laps in reflection around a luminary-lit Silver Lake.

“Light the Lake is a very important event for the Darlington Community as it's a time when we all come together and honor the truly strong members of our community who have battled cancer, and in honor of them, we raise funds to donate to cancer-oriented charities,” said sophomore coordinator Aaryn Ijames. “This is the main purpose of Light the Lake but we also have games, food, and performances from Darlington students as a way to celebrate and have fun. This is the first year that a class has been given the opportunity to coordinate this event and we could not be more excited.”

Fellow sophomore leader Andy Brunt agreed. “This year, our sophomore class is looking to make this Light the Lake the best one yet!" he said. "We are looking to run things just about the same, with just a few minor and exciting changes. What really makes this special is the general energy of the event. I encourage everybody who is looking for a good time and is willing to spread the word about cancer awareness to join us at the lake on March 31.”

The event will officially kick off with dinner in The Cove at 5 p.m. Throughout the evening, students, faculty, parents and friends are encouraged to move about Silver Lake. A special Walk of Honor will take place at 8 p.m., as cancer survivors and current patients lead participants around the heart of the Darlington campus.

Light the Lake is free to attend, but any and all donations will be graciously accepted. All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to local non-profit organizations Cancer Navigators and Summit Quest.

Cancer Navigators is an independent, community-based non-profit organization funded by donations from citizens and businesses of Northwest Georgia, and by grants from private and public organizations. Through education, counseling and access to valuable resources, Cancer Navigators is available to help ease some of the difficult emotions cancer patients may experience and help keep a sense of control over their diagnosis and treatment.

Summit Quest provides strength, hope and service to children in families affected by cancer through support programs and activities. Their various programs  include support groups, outdoor adventure trips and support efforts for individual families in need. All programs are provided at no cost to the families being served and are made possible through community support.

At the event will be opportunities for the Darlington Community to learn more about the evening’s highlighted organizations and to take part in a variety of activities. There will also be live music throughout the evening.
