Cates (‘17) and Delashmit (‘17) named Vincent J. Dooley Award honorees

Seniors Anna Katherine Cates and Ethan Delashmit have been selected as Darlington’s recipients of the Vincent J. Dooley Award and will move on to compete for a four-year, $1,000 per year college scholarship. The accolade is given by Athletes for a Better World in partnership with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to a male and female student who best demonstrate character, teamwork and citizenship.

Anna Katherine Cates is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Spanish Honor Society. A Furman Scholar, she has received the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award; the Georgia Certificate of Merit; the Hanks Medal; two Class Scholarship Awards; and E.L. Wright Awards for English 1, English 3, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language and Culture, and AP U.S. History.

In addition, Cates serves as president of the Y-Cabinet and Spanish Club; captain of her varsity cheerleading squad and soccer team; and an Admission Tiger Expert. She has participated in the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce High School Leadership Rome Program, the U.S. Naval Academy Summer STEM Program and the Darlington Center for Integrity and Leadership. She is the daughter of Christi and Bruce Cates of Rome.

Ethan Delashmit is a member of the varsity football team and also runs track. He is an AP Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, French Honor Society and has received the Merit Scholarship Award for the past four years. Delashmit serves as a member of the Y-Cabinet; Admission Tiger Expert; Discipline Committee President; and Neville House Day Prefect. He is the son of Ronnie and Howard Delashmit of Acworth. 

Athletes for a Better World uses athletics to help develop character, teamwork, and citizenship through an intentional commitment to a Code for Living. The code guides these athletes and applies to all facets of life in hopes of helping to transform the lives of these individuals, the face of sports, and the fabric of society.
