Inaugural Darlington Tech Fair coming Nov. 1

Third- through twelfth-graders have been diligently working on technology-based projects for Darlington School’s inaugural Tech Fair, which will be held on Nov. 1.  

 

Following rules and expectations set forth by the NWGA Regional Tech Fair, students will present their projects in 15 categories, including:


  • 3D Modeling

  • Animation

  • Audio Production

  • Device Modification

  • Digital Photo Production

  • Game Design

  • Graphic Design

  • Internet Applications

  • Mobile Apps

  • Multimedia Applications

  • Project Programming

  • Robotics

  • Tech Literacy Challenge

  • Tech Programming Challenge

  • Video Production


“By having a school-wide tech fair at Darlington, we will be sending the best of the best to the regional tech fair in January. Every student at Darlington has the opportunity to enter a project, and judges will determine the projects that will be entered in the regional fair in January,” said Rebekah Kinney, technology integration coordinator. “Having a broad range of project categories has brought a diverse group of students into the fair. Ninth- through twelfth-graders are involved in project development from robotics, computer science classes and photographics.”


Projects have been designed and created by students. Some adult guidance is allowed, but it must be clear that all work entered by students was completed by the students.


“Each student in grades 3-8 will have a project to present in the Tech Fair,” said Beth Wardlaw, technology integration specialist. “Much of the project work has been completed at school and some students have utilized their break times and remained after school to work on projects in the school’s makerspaces.”


Each student or team of students will receive 10 minutes to present their project to a panel of judges. The judging panels will be comprised of volunteers from the Rome community, many judging in their career field of expertise.


Students must be mindful of documenting sources and permissions for non-student produced materials. Consideration is given to whether or not the project is fully functional or complete. As students present their projects to the judges, they also consider how creatively the project is presented and how well the student understands the software or elements used to develop the project. Consideration is also given to how well elements of the project work together to serve its intended purpose.  


The top two winners in each category at each grade level (3-4; 5-6; 7-8; 9-10; 11-12) will present their project at the NWGA Regional Tech Fair on Jan. 27, 2017 at Georgia Highlands College.
